Advanced Beginner

Please read all directions before beginning project.

Size: Teen/Adult Women…this hat will fit many head sizes due to its stretch.

Materials List:

-Medium/Worsted Weight Yarn ,  1 skein (Pictures are shown using Red Heart Super Saver in Aran Fleck)…I also tend to use Lion Brand Yarns Vanna’s Choice yarn for this style.

US K/10 ½ /6.50 mm crochet hook…check gauge…feel free to change hook size to get the correct gauge.  Gauge is very important.

Tapestry Needle (for weaving in ends), or small hook for weaving short tails

Scissors

Gauge:

The gauge is 12 dc X 7 ½ rows = 4 in x 4 in

Notes:

-Make sure you are joining directly into the top of the Ch, at the end of each round. You will have 2 strands above hook and 1 below.  Do NOT join into the gap between the Ch  and the next st.  Joining into the gap will create a hole.

-* means repeat what is between them

-Ch=chain, sc= single crochet, dc= double crochet, sl st= slip stitch, st(s)= stitch(es)

-Count your stitches after each round to be sure you do not miss a stitch (the first stitch after the Ch  is often overlooked because it is tighter).

Instructions:

  • An inexpensive, printer-friendly, PDF version is available here, if you prefer… along with my complete portfolio of all of my original crochet patterns.

Hat will be worked wrong side out (back of st out). Turn right side out at end to wear.

Ch 4, join with sl st to first ch to form ring

R1: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), 11 dc in ring.  Join with sl st to top of Ch 3 = 12 sts

R2: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc in same st, * 2 dc in next st* around.  Join with sl st to top of Ch 3 = 24 sts

R3: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), 2 dc in next st, * dc in next st, 2 dc in next st* around.  Join with sl st to top of Ch 3 = 36 sts

R4:  Ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc in next st, 2 dc in next st, * dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc in next st*,  around.  Join with sl st to top of Ch 3 = 48 sts

R5:  Ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc in next st, * dc in next 3 sts, 2 dc in next st *, around.  Join with sl st to top of Ch 3 = 60 sts

R6:  Ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc in same st, dc in next 14 sts, * 2 dc in next st, dc in next 14 sts*, around.  Join with sl st to top of Ch 3 = 64 sts

R7-R15:  Ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc in next st, *dc in each st*, around.  Join with sl st to top of Ch 3 =64 sts

R16-R21:  Ch 2 (does NOT count as sc), sc in next st, sc in each st around.  Join with sl st to top of Ch 2 = 63 sts

When done with R21, fasten off and weave ends. Turn right side out.  Slouchy is now ready to wear.
